Olivier on the winning photo:
Nailed it! Aced so many aspects of a good photo. The use of the long lanes help your eyes find a direction in the image & the grazing light on the buildings and smokestack is accentuate the image very well. Post-processing on this image is equally top-notch. Wonderful pastel colours without overdramatizing or forcing within a certain colour space. This should look amazing on a big wall print! If there would be a tiny thing to nitpick at, I would be curious what the photo would look like about 5-10 degrees to the right, such that the middle road would be a tad more distributed on the centre of the image.

Olivier about the runner-up:
An absolutely wonderful and iconic sight of lower Manhattan. Framing/keystone absolutely spot on, but the editing is a little overdone in my opinion, mostly in the sky. Due to a clarity and contrast enhancement artefacts show up in the sky, and thus distract the viewers eyes towards the overly detailed sky. Not the impressive architecture in the foreground. If the sky would be a bit more natural and the blues slightly toned down, it’d have been a fierce competitor for #1!
3rd place is …
Olivier about the third place:
One of the few night photos that made it through to the final selection! Laurens has created a beautifully balanced night scene. Lines are straight, no washed out lights or lost shadows, A for technique!
What I could potentially say: The houseboats on the bottom left somewhat distract the scene in the way they are positioned. The composition might have worked better if the photo included more of the boats and houses in the foreground of the image, or leaving them out completely by moving right. The latter could potentially be a bit boring with minimal foreground, but the streaks of reflected light on the water do create perfectly straight lines, and balance the image well.
Congrats!
